Plant-based vegan pizzas are now available for full sized pies.
Ann Parker of the Santa Cruz Sentinel had this to say about her visit to the 41st Avenue location of Pizza My Heart in Capitola.
“I was standing with my friend Ruth in a steadily moving line at the 41st Avenue location of Pizza My Heart. The setting was comfortable and cozy, with padded booths inside and a small patio outside. Golden oldies were playing over the sound system, and the walls were lined with a dozen colorful surfboards and photographs of local surf greats.
“I was just as taken with my slice of pesto and pizza. The secret of this PMH crowd-pleaser is the almonds that replace the typical pine nuts in the pesto, giving it a velvety mouthfeel and a slight touch of sweetness that counterbalances the basil and salty mozzarella. We both remarked on the tasty, crisp crust of our slices, agreeing that this is one pizza place where you don’t leave your crust on the plate.
“When our San Andreas slice arrived, hot and aromatic, I remembered why I liked this particular pizza so much. Starting with a layer incorporating Dijon mustard and mozzarella cheese, the generous-sized triangle was bedecked with pepperoncinis, mini-peperoni slices and thin, salty curls of pastrami. The crowning touch: tiny “Sweety Drops,” or Peruvian sweet peppers, crimson pops of sweet-meets-hot that taste like a cross between mild jalapenos and cherry peppers. This flavor/texture combo was a definite winner.
“We went back and got one more piece of pizza, deciding that the Mushroom ($4) was a perfect ending to our meal. Simple and savory, the slice was blanketed in mozzarella and thinly sliced button mushrooms that tasted fresh and sweetly earthy. This pizza’s subtle flavor invited adding condiments, but it was also delicious unadorned.
“The hardest part about going to Pizza My Heart is choosing your pie. Do you order an old favorite or try something new? One option might be to check out the menu section featuring a selection of pizzas that have won national recognition, including the Virgin Creek with its ricotta and roma tomatoes — or the Figgy Piggy, which combines bacon, feta cheese, black figs and sage.”
